Whisk Broom
In 1797, Levi Dickenson, a Massachusetts farmer, created the first modern broom using sorghum (broomcorn). His design led to the rise of American broom-making. The Shakers improved broom-making in the early 1800’s, refining the flat, stitched design that became the standard for whisk brooms. But the 19th century, small whisk brooms were widely used for cleaning hearths, clothes and furniture.
