SPOOLS

Found in Paris, France

The larger antique wooden spools, beautifully wrapped with vintage threads, were used for weaving. Some of the spools have the makers name stamped on the top. The spools would have been used for winding continuous strips of wool prior to the spinning process.

The smaller French bobbins were used in the craft of “bobbin lacemaking,” where they acted as small spools to hold and manage threads, allowing lacemakers to twist and braid them together to create intricate, delicate lace patterns.

The antique metal reel, known as a chip log, was a navigation tool mariners used to estimate the speed of a vessel through water. The chip log consisted of a piece of wood attached to a log line. The log line, or rope, was wound around the reel with knots at uniform intervals to measure nautical mileage.
